Career Coaching

My name is Pat O'Connell. I started Conall Coaching Services in 2023 based on requests I have received, over the last 15 years to bring the insights and experiences from my academic and professional career, to help companies and individuals grow.

My story:

I graduated with a Double Mathematics degree, followed by a Computer Science degree. This led to the next 8 years in my career as a systems engineer, that's writing software at the chip level - nerdy stuff indeed!

Having solved a very difficult technical problem for my employer, Morgan Stanley, I was asked to move into management. For the next several years I progressed through data center management, applications development management, business relationship management and outsourcing management. At the end of my corporate career I was the Americas CIO for the Equities Business in ING Barings.

Next up was management consulting, business to business (B2B) brokering and teaching. During my consulting and B2B years I worked with many global companies, and interesting early stage tech companies.

I first spoke at Columbia University as a guest speaker in their Technology Management Program. I next became a mentor to several students in the program, before finally becoming an Adjunct Professor in the graduate degree program. Over the years I've been fortunate to work with over 1,100 students, a number of whom have gone on to start companies, and others progressed in to very senior roles - CEOs, CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, CIAO's, Head of Product, Sales, .....

The experiences I've had, and my years of research and teaching are available to all clients in our Career Coaching Service.

Our other coaches have similar experiences which you can read about in our Working With Us page.

Initial Interview

Welcome to your journey! Your first step begins with an initial interview with one of our qualified coaches. This session is designed to delve into your career story, current situation, and future goals, while also giving you insights into the valuable experiences our coaches can offer. Additionally, we’ll cover your time commitment, availability, and budget to ensure our coaching support aligns perfectly with your needs.

2

Start of Your Journey

As a first step we will have you complete a psychometric assessment. Our preferred assessment tool is by Lumina. In comparison with other personality assessment tools, Lumina scores significantly higher based on established metrics.

Once this assessment is complete we will meet with you to debrief the report - a 66 page assessment that shows personality preferences, shifts in personality traits, and recommendations on strengths and areas of possible improvements. After the debrief you will have some time to reflect on the feedback and think about any aspect of your life you would like to work on. Typically, this will link to the goals conversation we had during the initial interview.

Next up, will be an Emotional Intelligence (EI) Assessment that looks at 25 EI Competencies grouped around Self Awareness, Self Regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social Skills. Like with Lumina, we will debrief the EI Assessment with you, and ask you to reflect on its output.

In the final component of this phase - Start of Your Journey, we will work with you to identify the "One Big Thing" you would like our help to work on for the remainder of the coaching assignment.

3

Digging Into The Work

Now the hard work begins! Armed with your customize Lumina and EI assessments, and with clarity on your "One Big Thing" you want to work on, it's time to dig into the work.

During this phase you will meet weekly with your coach, for a 1 hour session, to review the progress you are making on your goal. At these sessions we will work on any other things that come up that you want help with.

Using a "toolbox" of coaching solutions, we will present appropriate insights and ideas, including exercises, that will help you progress.

Based on our experience, each client is unique. Our "toolbox" is an every expanding set of resources geared to help with the different issues and questions that come up.

This phase will continue for 6 weeks. At this point you will have made some progress, as well as received many valuable lessons and insights, that will help you on your journey.

Making Progress

Change, and achieving our goals, take time, particularly if they are going to stick. Understand is one thing, but making the change in thinking or behavior a habit takes time. In their study of work, Professors Kegan and Lahey, discovered that we have a built in immunity to change. In essence, to make changes stick, we have dig into our assumption, biases, values, opinions and notions.

In this phase, we will move to an hourly session every other week, for a total of 6 sessions over 3 months. Once again we'll use our toolbox of coaching solutions to help you on this phase of the journey. In our experience during this time new questions will come up, deeper insights will be gained, and practical exercises will be used.

5

End of the Journey - success??

In this final phase we will review what has worked, address any other questions and discuss any future steps. This will take the form of a summary report that will highlight key steps in the journey, including original goals, any new goals, coaching insights and a review of the exercises.

It is our hope that you will be very satisfied with the progress you have made. We will be cheering you on as you continue on your journey. We stand ready to offer any further assistance you might need.
